TIPS FOR PROTECTING YOUR TRANSMISSION – PART 1

August 7, 2024

This is a subtitle for your new post

Because it enables your vehicle to actually move by adapting the energy output of the engine to the drive wheels, the transmission is one of the most important parts of a vehicle. Whether they know what it does or how it works, most people know that when a transmission fails, repairs or replacement are usually very costly. However, there are things that you can do to protect your transmission. This post discusses preventative maintenance steps you can take to safeguard your transmission, while the second post in the series will offer driving tips that will help your transmission to last longer and perform better.

Here are 5 tips for protecting your vehicle’s transmission:

  1. Be sure to check the transmission fluid level on a regular basis. Since transmission fluid helps to keep the gears moving smoothly without friction, keeping the fluid at the proper level is one of the most important things you can do to keep your transmission working properly. The fluid should be bright red in color, with a slightly sweet smell.
  2. Have your transmission serviced regularly. Transmission fluid wears out over time, so in order to protect your vehicle, it’s a good idea to have your transmission fluid and filter changed annually. Doing so can add years to the life of your transmission.
  3. Keep your car’s cooling system functioning properly. In addition to cooling your vehicle’s engine, the cooling system also cools the transmission fluid. Research shows that excessive heat is the main reason for around 90% of transmission failures, so it is important to keep your car’s cooling system in excellent working order. This is particularly important if your vehicle tows a trailer, carries heavy loads, or you drive over rough or mountainous terrain on a regular basis.
  4. Take care of any transmission problems as soon as possible. Typically, problems with a transmission start out small and get worse over time. Taking care of any problems you notice as soon as possible can help to eliminate the need for expensive major repairs. Don’t ignore a change in the way your vehicle shifts gears, any signs of leaking transmission fluid, or a warning light on your dashboard.
  5. Don’t try to service it yourself. Although you can check the fluid yourself, draining or changing it should be handled by a professional, especially if you have an automatic transmission. If you do decide to top off your transmission fluid, be careful not to overfill it. Overfilling can cause the fluid to foam, which will lead to damage to your transmission.

Without a doubt, the hot Arizona climate is also tough on transmissions. Experts recommend having the filter and fluid changed every 15,000 miles if you drive in heavy city traffic or when outdoor temperatures consistently exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
